It is another week of intense reading and a lot of content to cover. I had an opportunity to dive deep into the world of bias and I was shocked to realize,I was suffering from implicit bias towards people in many different situations and it is just difficult to explain. but they are not very visible towards other people and they rarely played a big role in my process of decision making.
I was very fascinated by the article titled ‘ Curriculum as a window and a mirror’.It really discussed a very common problem that we have in our education curriculum. There was a time I spent sometime in a public school classroom and I was going through the collection of the books and did not see a lot of books that represented the character of people of color and imagine the majority of students in that students are students of color.
It was just few days ago I was in a Barnes & Nobles store here in Minnesota,I happened to be in the children section and had a look at the Religion section and there was only book about christianity.I am a muslim and when I take my children to that store they don’t see books about their faith and they don’t see themselves in the books of their classroom now will they feel part of this society and this community?
I am sure many people like me have the same or more questions on why they don’t see themselves represented in their communities literature.For the last few decades we are seeing progress nevertheless we have along way to go before we see everybody’s face and voices in books and our literature.
